TEG 11

TROPHY

Alex Baker's Four-Shot Lead Lasted Three Holes

Jon Baker had led the Trophy for 45 holes before losing it at El Prat, and needed only an ordinary 35 on the Stadium course to take it back by six as his brother's final round unravelled in three separate collapses.

Jon Baker had held the TEG 11 Trophy lead since the fourth hole of the opening round. Forty-five holes at the top, spanning three rounds. It ended on the Saturday at El Prat's Azul course, quietly, with nobody making a fuss. Alex Baker drew level at the first, where even a bogey was worth three points — which tells you rather a lot about the Azul's opening hole. He took the lead outright at the 13th, the middle of three straight pars worth nine points across the 12th to the 14th.

Jon Baker was crossing the identical ground in the opposite direction. Double, double, triple at the 11th, 12th and 13th. Three holes without a net par, conducted with the air of a man discharging an obligation. The brothers finished the round with Alex Baker two points clear at the top of the Trophy, 110 to 108, and Jon Baker leading the TEG 11 Green Jacket.

The final round at PGA Catalunya's Stadium course dismantled Alex Baker methodically. He posted 27 points, the worst round of his TEG career to that point, and 34 over gross. Seven shots went in three holes from the 4th. Eight more went from the 12th. Eight again over the closing three, including a quadruple-bogey eight at the 17th, which matched the eight he had already taken at the 9th and thereby lent the round a pleasing symmetry. Jon Baker had a quadruple bogey of his own at the 13th. It cost him nothing whatsoever. He could have taken another and still had change. He had drawn level at the 6th and gone clear for good at the 7th, 123 points to 122. He won the Trophy on 143 points by six, which is what happens when a man's disasters are simply better timed than everyone else's.

GREEN JACKET

Two Course Records, One Green Jacket

Jon Baker rewrote the gross records at both PGA Catalunya courses in successive days, and finally converted three near-misses into the Jacket at the expense of David Mullin, the holder of eight.

Jon Baker won the TEG 11 Green Jacket at +70, three clear of David Mullin, and he did it on the back of two days that rearranged the record books at Camiral. His opening 90 gross on the PGA Catalunya Stadium Course was a new course record, taking five strokes off the previous mark of 94 set across five prior visits. On the Friday he did it again on the Tour Course, going round in 84 to beat the standing record of 89. Both were personal course bests by some distance: nine strokes better than his previous best of 99 on the Stadium Course, six better than his 90 on the Tour.

The lead was not held throughout. Baker took it at the fourth hole of round one and kept it for 37 holes, across three rounds, before Mullin relieved him of it at the fifth on the Saturday at El Prat's Azul Course, a course neither man had seen before. Baker's reply arrived immediately: three holes without a dropped gross shot at the seventh, eighth and ninth, capped by a birdie at the par-five ninth, worth ten Stableford points. Mullin had held the lead for the length of an average conversation.

Mullin opened the final round with three pars for nine points and posted 91 on the Stadium Course, his own best there. The three strokes stayed exactly where they were. At +70 it is the third-best gross total of Baker's career.

JOHN PATTERSON

Patterson's Eleven, And The Spoon Dodged

John Patterson arrived as the holder of the Wooden Spoon, posted the worst gross round the Tour course has seen and a six-over eleven at its 15th, and somehow handed the trinket to somebody else.

John Patterson's four days in Catalonia were defined by the holes that got away from him, and they got away in numbers. The opening round on the PGA Catalunya Stadium course produced four: a quintuple-bogey 9 at the 4th, a quadruple-bogey 8 at the 10th, another 9 at the 13th and an 8 at the 17th. Not one of them returned a Stableford point.

Round two on the Tour course was worse. At the par-five 15th he ran up an 11, a sextuple bogey and the highest score relative to par he has recorded in a TEG round. It contributed to a gross 103, a new course-worst at PGA Catalunya Tour, beating the previous mark of 101 set across five earlier visits. Five visits of groundwork, then, and one afternoon to surpass it all.

El Prat's Azul course offered a mixed day. He took a 9 at the 16th, but earlier gathered nine points in three holes with bogeys at the 8th, 9th and 10th. Three bogeys. His best sustained run of the trip.

The closing round back on the Stadium course kept faith with the pattern. He dropped seven shots across the 7th, 8th and 9th without a net par among them, then eight more between the 12th and 14th, before finishing with back-to-back pars at the 16th and 17th for a 99. And yet, having trailed the TEG 11 Trophy lead by 16 points at one stage, he closed to within eight by the finish.

WOODEN SPOON | DAVID MULLIN

Eight Jackets, And Now A Spoon

David Mullin shot personal bests at both PGA Catalunya courses and came second in the gross, yet finished the Stableford ten points behind anyone else after El Prat's back nine and the Stadium's closing stretch took their cut.

David Mullin finished bottom of the TEG 11 field, collecting the Wooden Spoon with 125 points across the four rounds in Catalonia. Ten points adrift of the man immediately above him, which is not a near miss.

The scorecard was not the flat line that last place implies, and this is the part he will want read aloud. On the Tour Course in round two he took 10 points from holes 8 to 10, closing the run with a birdie at the par-five 10th, and his 85 there was a personal best on the course, four strokes better than the 89 from his only previous visit in TEG 6. The Stadium Course produced the same pattern: a round-four 91, three shots inside the 94 he managed at the same venue in TEG 6, and another course best.

The damage came in bursts, and it came generously. El Prat's Azul Course, new to the group in round three, caught him at the par-three 6th, where a 7 went down as a quadruple bogey and a blank. It caught him again from the 11th to the 15th, five consecutive holes without a net par, costing seven points against his handicap. The final round ran the same shape backwards: three straight pars from the 1st for nine points, then seven gross shots dropped over the 15th, 16th and 17th to finish. By then the Spoon had been settled for some time. He gave it those three holes anyway.

GREGG WILLIAMS

Fourteen Shots Better, Still Detonating

Gregg Williams gave up a quintuple bogey or worse in all four rounds, including eleven shots in four holes on the final day, and still walked off the Stadium course with the best gross figure he has ever posted there.

Gregg Williams arrived at PGA Catalunya's Stadium Course for his third visit and left with a course personal best. His 99 in the final round of TEG 11 was fourteen strokes better than the 113 he posted there in TEG 6, the only previous time he had played it. On the Tour Course he matched rather than beat his history: 92 in round two, exactly the number he shot on his last visit. El Prat's Azul Course was new ground, and he negotiated it in 95.

What did not change was the appointment. Once per round, Williams sets aside one hole and pays into it. In round one at the Stadium the tithe was eight at the par-three 5th, a quintuple bogey. On the Tour Course it was a ten at the par-five 15th. At El Prat, eight at the par-four 5th. And in the final round, nestled in the middle of that career-best 99, nine at the par-four 10th. Four rounds, four payments, no missed instalments.

That last one came inside the worst passage of his four days. From the 8th through the 11th at the Stadium on Sunday, Williams played four holes in eleven over par: double bogey, double bogey, the nine, then another double. Remove those four holes and the number would look considerably kinder. The improvement stands regardless, and he is entitled to it.
