TROPHY

Jon Baker Completes the Third Double

Alex Baker led by four after three holes and signed for 27 points, the lowest score of his twenty rounds, handing over a lead he had held since the third round.

Jon Baker completed the TEG 11 double on the final day. He overturned a two-point deficit to take the 2018 TEG 11 Trophy, and carried off the TEG 11 Green Jacket as well, a lead he had held unchanged into the last round. It was only the third double in TEG history, after TEG 2 and TEG 4.

It was built on Alex Baker's collapse. He posted 27 points, the worst round of his career to date. The shots went in three separate instalments, holes 4-6, 12-14 and 16-18, as though rationed out so as not to distress him all at once. There were also quadruple bogeys at the 9th, the hardest hole on the course, and at the 17th.

Jon Baker drew level for the Trophy lead at the 6th. He did so while making a double bogey. From there he pulled away and won by six points. His own card was not clean. A quadruple bogey arrived at the 13th, unannounced and unopposed. He then played the 9th and 10th in pars, two holes of ordinary competence that proved entirely sufficient. Winning here is not about avoiding the wreckage. It is about being the man whose wreckage costs him least.

JOHN PATTERSON

Thirteen Shots Better at the Stadium

The man who had posted a 9, a 9, an 11 and another 9 across the first three rounds finally got round the Stadium Course without one.

John Patterson shot 36 Trophy points at PGA Catalunya's Stadium course on Sunday, matching the best score in a field of five. His gross 99 was a course personal best, thirteen shots better than his only previous visit to the Stadium, back in TEG 11, when he returned 112.

Smoothness did not enter into it. He bled seven shots across holes 7 to 9, a stretch that opened with a triple bogey on the hardest hole on the course. He then lost eight more across holes 12 to 14, with triple bogeys at the par-5 12th and at the 14th. He also played 16 and 17 in level par, a rare pocket of order in an otherwise disorderly afternoon.

Even so, he closed to within eight shots of the Trophy lead, having trailed by as much as sixteen earlier in the round. Progress, of a sort, and considerably more than most managed.

WOODEN SPOON

Mullin's Best Here and Still Last

A personal best round at the Stadium Course, a share of the day's best gross score, and ten points adrift of everyone else on the sheet that decides the Spoon.

David Mullin produced his best ever round on PGA Catalunya's Stadium Course in the final round of TEG 11, a gross 91. It shaved a shot off his previous best there. It also matched the lowest gross score of the day, a mark returned by Jon Baker, who spent the same afternoon taking both the TEG 11 Trophy and the TEG 11 Green Jacket.

Mullin opened superbly. Three straight pars through the first three holes, nine Stableford points, briefly level with Baker at the head of the Green Jacket (Gross). Then the round unravelled. A triple bogey at the 15th, doubles at the 16th and 17th. Seven shots in three holes, without a single net par among them. The good work was erased in the time it takes to lose a ball twice.

So he matched the best gross score of the day and still closed out TEG 11 with the Wooden Spoon. The two facts sit together quite comfortably. His margin to safety had been five strokes. He finished ten adrift.

GREGG WILLIAMS

Eleven Shots Gone in Four Holes

Gregg Williams still set a personal best at the Stadium Course, which will be no comfort whatever given the final Trophy table.

On the final day of the 2018 TEG 11 Trophy, at PGA Catalunya's Stadium course, Gregg Williams assembled the most damaging stretch of the round. It cost him second place by a single point.

The trouble was concentrated around the turn. A double bogey at the par-3 8th. Another at the par-4 9th, the hardest hole on the course. A quintuple bogey nine at the 10th, which returned nothing at all. A further double at the 11th to round the sequence off. Four holes, eleven shots lost, four Stableford points recovered.

One point was the difference at the end. The round was not without reward, mind. Williams's gross was his best of the trip on the Stadium course, two shots better than his previous mark there, and a course personal best for the TEG. He will be told this repeatedly. It was also the round in which Jon Baker moved into the outright Trophy lead.
