TEG 14 · Round 4

TROPHY

A Ten at the Sixteenth Settles It

David Mullin becomes the fifth man to carry off both the Trophy and the Green Jacket in the same TEG, and did it with the worst card of the final day.

David Mullin completed the TEG 14 double. The Trophy and the Green Jacket, both taken, his fifth double in TEG history after TEGs 2, 4, 11 and 13. He did it while posting the worst round in the four-man field at Prince's - Shore/Dunes. Thirty-seven stableford points. The card carried a quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th, one of the hardest holes on the course, a hole he approached with the confidence of a man who had already won and the results of a man who had never played. His Trophy lead was cut to two shots by the finish. It held. He did not win by avoiding the wreckage. He simply owned the cheapest pile of it.

The closest challenge came from Alex Baker, who clawed nine shots back off the Trophy lead to stand just two adrift. It was built on two hot stretches: ten points across the first three holes, then eleven more from three consecutive pars at the 13th to the 15th. For a short while the thing looked genuinely alive. Then came the 16th, one of the easiest holes on the course. Baker carded a sextuple bogey 10. The run did not fade. It was put down. In the Green Jacket race, Gregg Williams and Jon Baker both closed sharply, from deficits of 18 and 15 to eight and seven respectively. Neither caught Mullin. Mullin, having spent the afternoon playing the worst golf on the property, sealed the double regardless.

JON BAKER

Jon Baker Breaks the Prince's Record

A mark of 85 had survived nine visits to the Shore and Dunes routing; it did not survive a Sunday on which its owner had nothing left to play for.

Jon Baker set a new course record at Prince's – Shore / Dunes. He went round in 83 gross, beating the previous mark of 85, a figure that had stood across nine prior visits to the layout. It was also his personal best there by two shots, improving on the 85 he carded in TEG 13. He arrived twelve strokes better than his last visit to the course.

The record was built on a five-hole stretch from the 11th during which he did not drop a gross shot. There were birdies at the 12th and, remarkably, at the 13th, the hardest hole on the course. Across holes 12 to 15 he accumulated 14 stableford points. The run ended at the 16th with a double bogey. Later, at the last, a quadruple-bogey 8 crept quietly onto the card, as if hoping nobody would check. Somebody checked. Neither blemish dented the outcome. The 83 stands as the new benchmark for the course.

WOODEN SPOON | JON BAKER

The Spoon Arrives With a Record

Thirty-nine points on Sunday against 29, 29 and 28 before it — the arithmetic of a man who solved the course on the day it stopped counting.

Jon Baker finished the 2021 TEG 14 Wooden Spoon in last place by twelve points. The final afternoon at Prince's - Shore/Dunes produced the best golf of his four days. Having managed 28 stableford points in round three, he returned 39 in round four. An eleven-point swing, and his best round of the tournament. The round included an 8 at the 18th, a quadruple bogey inserted into the proceedings like a man signing off with a shrug. It was still a personal best on the course this TEG, beating his previous best gross there by two shots and improving twelve strokes on his last visit to Prince's. The form mattered further up the leaderboard too. Baker's charge cut his deficit in the TEG 14 Green Jacket race from a high of fifteen points down to seven behind David Mullin, who remained in front throughout. It did nothing whatsoever at the other end. He closed the tournament bottom of the Wooden Spoon table, twelve points adrift of the next player. Some men peak too late. Baker peaked at the wrong end of the table entirely.
