TEG 12 · Round 4

TROPHY

Patterson Takes the Trophy by Ten

Gregg Williams posted his best ever round at the Stadium on Sunday and still finished two points further back than he began the day.

John Patterson is the TEG 12 Trophy champion, by ten points from Gregg Williams. He carried the outright lead into the final round at PGA Catalunya's Stadium course and declined to give it back.

The move came early. Holes 3 to 6 yielded 13 points, two bogeys included, the strokes on his card doing quiet and uncomplaining work throughout. Then, from the 15th, he dropped six shots in three holes. Three consecutive double bogeys. A man with that much cushion can afford to give some of it away. It barely marked him.

Williams, by then playing for the runner-up spot, opened in trouble: a bogey and two doubles through the 6th. A birdie at the 7th, one of the easier holes on the course, stopped the slide. What followed was the best round he has ever played on the Stadium course, eight shots better than his last visit there. The Trophy gap went from eight points to ten. He played the golf of his life and finished two points further away than when he started. Jon Baker led the Green Jacket race throughout the same round.

JON BAKER

Jon Baker Breaks the Stadium Record

An 89 lowers a gross mark that had stood through 21 TEG visits to Girona, and settles the Green Jacket eight clear of David Mullin.

Jon Baker closed out the TEG 12 Green Jacket on the final day at PGA Catalunya - Stadium with a gross 89. It is a new course record, beating the previous mark of 90 across 21 visits to the venue. It is also a personal best there, improving on his own 90. He already led the Green Jacket going into the round. By the close his advantage had grown from five strokes to eight, with the race at the top entirely undisturbed.

The round itself was not serene. Two bogeys in a row were followed by a double bogey at the par-5 7th, one of the easiest holes on the course. A birdie at the 8th stopped the rot. He then settled, playing 14 through 16 without dropping a shot, only for a double bogey at the 17th to end that run precisely as the record came into view. The record survived him anyway. The 89 stands as the best round ever posted on the course.

WOODEN SPOON

Two Quadruple Bogeys Sink David Mullin

The only lead to change hands all afternoon was the one nobody wanted, and it moved before the fourth green.

David Mullin took the TEG 12 Wooden Spoon in the final round at PGA Catalunya's Stadium Course. He dropped to the bottom of that standing with a wretched start, then spent the rest of the round demonstrating that he had not needed to.

The damage came at the 3rd and the 4th. Back-to-back quadruple bogeys: a 9 on the par-5 3rd, an 8 on the par-4 4th. A double bogey at the 5th completed the set. Ten shots gone in three holes, and not one net par among them. That was enough to flip him past Alex Baker and to the foot of the Spoon race, four points adrift of the next man up.

The same round contained the best four-hole stretch of his day. From the 11th to the 14th he went par, birdie, par, birdie, without dropping a gross shot, and collected 14 stableford points. It was superb. It was also about two hours late. The Spoon was decided by three ruinous holes, not by the four good ones that came along afterwards to apologise for them.

STUART NEUMANN

Stuart Neumann Holes Out for Five

The only eagle of TEG 12's final round arrived two holes after a double bogey and dragged a scrappy afternoon into a personal best.

Stuart Neumann's fourth round at PGA Catalunya's Stadium course was a rescue job. He bled seven shots across holes 3 to 5: a double bogey on the par-5 3rd, a triple on the par-4 4th, a double on the par-3 5th. A second slide arrived late. A double bogey at the 13th and a bogey at the 14th threatened to undo everything he had rebuilt. Then, at the par-5 15th, one of the easiest holes on the course, he holed out for an eagle. A five-point stableford swing, and a run of bogeys-or-worse brought to an abrupt halt.

That one hole set the shape of the round. Neumann signed for a gross 96, his personal best at the Stadium course, four shots inside the 100 he had carried into this, his third visit to the venue. Two separate collapses, and still the best score he has ever posted at Camiral. The eagle did that.
