TEG 3 · Round 3

DAVID MULLIN | JON BAKER

Mullin Smashes Boavista's Course Record

A gross 85 beats David Mullin's own recent mark by three shots as Jon Baker's near-flawless net -7 keeps the Trophy procession rolling.

David Mullin went round Boavista Golf & Spa Resort in a gross 85. The course record was 88, and it had survived 25 prior visits. It did not survive this one. His +14 gross is the best gross round in TEG history to date, and his net -4 ranks third-best all time. There were stretches where he was merely steady, which is what greatness looks like when nobody is watching. He played the 8th and the 9th without dropping a shot.

All of which was promptly overshadowed. Jon Baker signed for a net -7, the second-best round in TEG history. He did it while also taking a quintuple-bogey 9 at the 18th and a quadruple-bogey 8 at the 5th. Nine shots given away on two holes, absorbed into the card as though they were an administrative matter. The rest of the round simply paid the bill and moved on.

Nothing changed at the top, which was rather the point. Baker's Trophy lead grew from 13 to 16. Mullin's Green Jacket lead stretched from 5 to 9. The race did not reshape. It hardened.

WOODEN SPOON

Meller's Meltdown Ends Neumann's Reprieve

Three separate blow-up holes before the turn undo any chance of a quiet round for Henry Meller and leave Stuart Neumann breathing easier at the foot of the table.

Henry Meller's third round at Boavista came apart at the first opportunity. A triple bogey at the 1st, stroke index 14 and one of the gentler holes out there, dropped him to the foot of the TEG 3 Wooden Spoon race. He climbed off it at the 2nd. At the 3rd he took a quintuple bogey 10 at the par-5 3rd. It was his worst hole against par of the tournament, and it was enough. Outright last place, secured before most men had loosened up.

He then set about consolidating. A double bogey at the 5th. A quadruple bogey at the 6th. The bleeding continued in an orderly, almost professional fashion. It was not until a birdie at the 11th that Meller finally put a hand on the wound.

The result was a straight swap at the bottom. Stuart Neumann, who had held last place overnight, was reprieved without lifting a finger. Meller took the unwanted lead, and the gap back up to safety went from one shot to five.

GREGG WILLIAMS | STUART NEUMANN

Two Personal Bests Go Unnoticed

A quadruple bogey at the 2nd barely dents a day in which Gregg Williams and Stuart Neumann both produce among the best rounds ever recorded at a TEG event.

Gregg Williams and Stuart Neumann produced the two outstanding rounds of the day at Boavista. By TEG standards, they were among the outstanding rounds of all time. Williams's net -4 ranks third-best in TEG history. Neumann's gross 18 points ranks third among all Gross rounds played. Both were personal bests on the course. Williams's 97 beat his previous best of 102. Neumann's 89 bettered his 92. Each man has now visited Boavista six times, and each finally got something back for it.

Williams's card was not spotless. He took a quadruple bogey 7 at the short par-3 2nd, one of the easier holes on the course by stroke index. For a few minutes the whole thing looked like it might come apart. It did not.

Neither round troubled the leaders in the slightest. Baker's cushion atop the TEG 3 Trophy grew from 13 to 16. Mullin's Green Jacket lead extended from 5 to 9. The only tangible reward arrived at the other end of the sheet, where Neumann's score lifted him off the bottom of the Wooden Spoon race. The unwanted spot passed to Henry Meller.
