TEG 15 · Round 3

GREGG WILLIAMS

Williams Carves New Course Record

An 82 gross, fourteen shots better than his own previous best around the Sintra hills, is the finest round of Gregg Williams's TEG career and leaves both his races looking healthier than ever.

Gregg Williams shot a gross 82 in the third round at Penha Longa. The old course record was 86, a figure that had held firm across six previous visits. It is now a footnote.

The 82 is also Williams's personal-best gross round in the TEG, +10 to par. It is worth pausing on what +10 means here. In most company it is a disappointing afternoon. At Penha Longa it is a monument.

His previous best at the venue was a 96, set at TEG 8 on his only other visit. That is fourteen strokes removed from his own mark at the second attempt. He did not defeat the mountain so much as decline to acknowledge it.

There was no purple patch, which is the unsettling part. Two separate two-hole stretches, 7-8 and 10-11, each yielded a birdie and a par with nothing dropped. The birdie at the par-5 8th was the nearest thing to a flourish.

Williams arrived leading both the TEG 15 Trophy and the TEG 15 Green Jacket. He left leading both by more. The Trophy lead grew from 9 to 18, the Jacket from 14 to 17. The field's contribution was to stand still and watch it happen.

WOODEN SPOON

Alex Baker Inherits The Wooden Spoon

A ruinous stretch from the 12th to the 14th, capped by a double-figure score at the par-4 14th, hands Alex Baker sole occupancy of the Wooden Spoon cellar as Stuart Neumann's revival lifts him clear.

The third round at Penha Longa saw the TEG 15 Wooden Spoon change hands. Alex Baker collapsed. Stuart Neumann recovered. The transaction was completed without ceremony.

Baker began with a double bogey at the 1st, then ran three holes without managing better than a bogey. A birdie at the par-3 5th halted the slide and briefly suggested a plan. It was not a plan.

From the 12th the round came apart in a manner one can only describe as thorough. A quadruple bogey at the 12th. A double bogey at the 13th. A 10 at the par-4 14th, one of the harder holes on the course. Twelve shots over three holes, and not one point to show for any of it. That stretch deposited Baker at the bottom of the Wooden Spoon standings, where he now resides.

Neumann's round travelled in the opposite direction, having first travelled in Baker's. He went seven over across holes 11 to 13 and looked to be joining in. Instead he answered with 9 points from the next three holes, built on a birdie-free but efficient bogey-par-bogey stretch. Nothing about it was handsome. All of it counted.

It capped a substantial swing after a poor second round, and leaves Neumann's Wooden Spoon lead over Baker at 14 shots. Baker will have to work hard to lose it.

JOHN PATTERSON

Patterson's Wild Penha Longa Baptism

Nineteen points in six holes and two separate double-figure scores summed up a first look at the Sintra hills for John Patterson, whose scorecard swung wildly all afternoon.

John Patterson's third round was his first ever sight of the Atlantic Course. For a while it went extremely well, which only made what followed more instructive.

He ran holes 3 to 7 for just one dropped gross shot, a bogey at the 4th. Across holes 3-8 he banked 19 Stableford points. He had the bearing of a man who had read the course notes and found them straightforward.

Then the round turned, and it turned completely. A double bogey at the 9th. A quadruple bogey 8 at the 10th, one of the harder holes on the course. Another double bogey at the 11th. Eight shots bled across three holes, with no apparent moment where anyone intervened.

The 16th finished the job. A quintuple bogey 9 at Penha Longa's stroke index 1, which is a great deal of effort for no points whatsoever.

The gross 99 stands as the best he will manage at the course this TEG, this being his only visit. There is a certain economy to that. Elsewhere Gregg Williams retained his lead in both the TEG 15 Trophy and the Green Jacket. The Wooden Spoon picture shifted, with Alex Baker moving into last place.
