TEG 12 · Round 3

JOHN PATTERSON

Forty-Five Points, and a Ten Too

A quintuple bogey at the 3rd and a nine at the 7th somehow coexisted with the third-best round of John Patterson's TEG career and his best gross score on this course.

John Patterson carded 45 points at the Stadium Course in Girona in round three of the 2019 TEG Trophy. It was the best score of the day and a personal best on the course. His previous best gross there was 99. He returned a 95.

The round also contained a quintuple-bogey 10 at the par-5 3rd. And a quadruple-bogey 9 at the par-5 7th, one of the easiest holes on the course. Nine shots to par, surrendered across two holes, without visible distress. Most men would treat either as the defining event of their year. Patterson appeared to log them as incidental expenses and move on.

The rest was brutally efficient. He drew level for the Trophy lead with a bogey at the 1st, then took it outright with another bogey at the 4th. Holes 4 to 6 yielded him 10 points. Bogeys at the 13th and 14th threatened a second haemorrhage, and he stopped it with a birdie at the par-5 15th. That was part of a 19-point run across holes 12 to 17. Overnight he had been one point behind Gregg Williams. He finished the day eight clear at the top of the Trophy.

TROPHY

Williams Loses Both Leads in Three Holes

One point clear in the Trophy and level in the Jacket when he teed off, Gregg Williams bled twelve gross shots from the 11th to the 13th and now trails in both.

Gregg Williams began the third round of the 2019 TEG 12 at PGA Catalunya's Stadium Course sharing the lead in both the TEG 12 Trophy and the TEG 12 Green Jacket. For a time he tightened his grip. A par at the 3rd took him outright ahead in the Trophy. A bogey at the 2nd had already pulled him level for the Jacket lead. At the 9th he drew level once more to share the Trophy top spot, that time with a bogey at the stroke index 1 hole.

Then the round turned. Between the 11th and the 13th he shed twelve gross shots without a net par. The centrepiece was an 11 at the par-4 13th, his worst hole against par of the tournament. He steadied himself with pars at the 14th and the 15th, which is the golfing equivalent of straightening your tie at the bottom of the stairs. The damage was already done. Jon Baker had reclaimed the Jacket lead back at the 4th. By the close Patterson led the Trophy by eight and Baker held the Jacket by five. Williams left the day holding neither.

ALEX BAKER

Alex Baker Drops Nine Twice Over

Three holes at the start and four at the finish accounted for eighteen gross shots, and yet the card was still an improvement on his last trip to Girona.

Alex Baker's third round at PGA Catalunya - Stadium was wrecked at both ends. He opened with a quadruple bogey 8 at the 2nd, stroke index 5, one of the easier holes out there. He never recovered from it. Nine shots went over the following three holes, with no net par recorded across the 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

He then closed in precisely the same manner, dropping nine shots over the last four holes. A double bogey at the 15th. Another at the 16th. A third at the 17th. A triple bogey at the 18th, one of the hardest holes on the course. Not a net par among them. The symmetry was almost admirable.

The damage sent him to the bottom of the TEG 12 Wooden Spoon race at the 11th, and again at the 17th. He had not meaningfully left in between. The gap to the next-worst player narrowed from four shots to two, which is the only kind of progress available from down there. There was a crumb of comfort. His 101 gross was five shots better than his last visit here. It was still one worse than the 100 he has managed on this course.

STUART NEUMANN | DAVID MULLIN

Two Rounds Unravel on the Back Nine

The 15th gave John Patterson a birdie and Stuart Neumann a nine, which is roughly the Stadium Course's idea of even-handedness.

On the inward stretch at PGA Catalunya - Stadium, Stuart Neumann and David Mullin both lost control of their rounds. John Patterson was pulling away at the top of the 2019 TEG Trophy at the time.

Neumann's collapse ran from the 14th to the 17th. Ten shots in four holes. A double bogey at the 14th, a quadruple bogey 9 at the par-5 15th, which is the easiest hole on the course, then further doubles at the 16th and the 17th.

Mullin's decline was slower and more orderly, which did not help him. He had posted a strong 40 points in the second round. He managed 30 here, a ten-point swing. A double bogey at the 9th and a bogey at the 14th both hurt his Wooden Spoon standing and left him last of the six players in the field.

Meanwhile Patterson moved into the Trophy lead. A one-shot deficit became an eight-shot advantage over Gregg Williams, who had led going into the round.
