TEG 8 · Round 2

GREGG WILLIAMS

The Best Round Nobody Enjoyed

Gregg Williams's card ran hot, cold, catastrophic and hot again, yet still topped the field by some distance.

Gregg Williams produced the round of the day at Penha Longa in TEG 2's second round. He posted 41 Stableford points. He also fell apart twice, either side of a steady middle stretch. The damage came in two instalments. First, a nine-shot bleed across holes 11 to 13: a double bogey at the 11th, a quintuple bogey 10 at the par-5 12th, and another double at the 13th. A 10 on a par 5 is not misfortune. It takes commitment. Then came a second slide from 15 to 17, three more shots gone, capped by a triple bogey at the 16th, the hardest hole on the course. Sandwiched between the carnage was a run of calm: back-to-back pars at the 6th and 7th. Two holes. That was the calm. None of it stopped Williams posting the best score of the day in a six-man field. His lead atop the TEG Trophy standings went from four points to eleven. David Mullin remained clear at the top of the Green Jacket race after the round.

GREEN JACKET

Mullin Extends His Green Jacket Cushion

A near-flawless run through the turn set up David Mullin's biggest lead of the week, just as Alex Baker's finish unravelled behind him.

David Mullin extended his TEG 8 Green Jacket lead at Penha Longa on Thursday. The gap in the Trophy race behind Gregg Williams stretched to 11, with scoring brutal for most of the field. Mullin was steady rather than spectacular. He went two holes around the turn without dropping a shot, with a birdie at the par-5 6th and a par at the 7th. He finished with 86, his best gross score at the course through the event. Nothing about it was memorable. It is currently leading the Green Jacket.

Alex Baker's day collapsed at the other end of the card. Four straight double bogeys from the 11th through the 14th cost him eight shots. The finish was worse. A double bogey at the 17th, sandwiched between quadruple bogeys at the 16th and the 18th. Ten shots in three holes. The 18th is a par 5 and it produced a 9. He then ran out of holes on which to continue. Baker's Green Jacket gap to Mullin now stands at six, and his Wooden Spoon prospects are looking increasingly real.

WOODEN SPOON | STUART NEUMANN

The Wooden Spoon Race Tightens

A stronger round from Stuart Neumann should have eased the pressure at the foot of the table, but Henry Meller's own struggles kept the gap shrinking instead.

Stuart Neumann arrived at Penha Longa firmly last in the race for the TEG 8 Wooden Spoon. A wretched opening round of 17 Stableford points had tightened his grip on the booby prize, the gap to safety out to 12. Round two told a different story. Neumann jumped to 31 points. That is a swing of 14 on his first-round total, and his best score of the trip on the course. It did not move him off the bottom. It did cut the gap to 8.

Henry Meller made sure it closed no further. Through the front nine he had the card of a man in complete control, on for a share of the best round of the day on this course. Then he lost the plot for four holes in the middle of the back nine. A double bogey, two triple bogeys and another double across holes 11 to 14. Ten shots dropped, two Stableford points salvaged. It kept Neumann's rescue act from becoming a genuine escape.

PENHA LONGA

Penha Longa's Sixteenth Draws Blood

Index one on the card, and it played like it, with three of the six-strong field coming to grief at the same hole.

The 16th at Penha Longa is the toughest hole on the Atlantic Course and stroke index one. In a single round of TEG 2, it processed three men.

Henry Meller made a quintuple bogey nine. Stuart Neumann matched him shot for shot with a nine of his own. Alex Baker got away more lightly with a quadruple bogey eight. All three returned blanks on their Stableford cards for the hole.

Neumann's was the most expensive. He had arrived at Penha Longa already anchored to the bottom of the Wooden Spoon standings. The gap to the next-worst player did narrow from 12 shots to 8 by round's end. A nine at stroke index one contributed nothing to that. Meller and Baker had rather more room to absorb the damage. For one round, the 16th was unforgiving to everyone who came through it.
