TEG 18 · Round 2

JOHN PATTERSON | GREGG WILLIAMS

Two Share the Day's Honours

A cold stretch nearly buried John Patterson's round before a personal best rescued it, while Gregg Williams simply carried on from where his poor opening round left off — in the opposite direction.

Gregg Williams and John Patterson both carded 42 points. It was the best Stableford return of the day in the 2025 TEG Trophy. They arrived there by routes that had almost nothing in common.

Patterson's round lurched. A quadruple bogey at the 4th, one of the hardest holes on the course, set the tone early. Then came the 6th to the 10th, five holes across which he shed 11 shots. A man watching would have assumed the round was over. It was not.

What followed was his best golf of the day. Sixteen points across holes 11 to 15, three pars with two bogeys wedged between them. It was enough to set a course personal best for this TEG, lowering his best gross score here to 94. He had spent the front nine dismantling the round and the back nine rebuilding it. The scorecard, mercifully, only records the total.

Williams took the quiet road to the same number. He had opened with 31 points in round one, which is not a platform so much as a warning. He turned in 11 shots better on the same course. Nine points came across holes 3 to 5. He closed bogey-free from 13 to 16 for 13 points, four holes that included the course's hardest without costing him a shot. No drama, no recovery arc, nothing to tell the grandchildren. Just 42 points.

ALEX BAKER

A Record Nobody Wanted

A closing double blow-up gave Alex Baker the worst round in the Tour Course's history, yet Stableford's forgiving arithmetic meant his Trophy lead barely noticed.

Round 2 at PGA Catalunya's Tour Course produced the worst round the venue has seen in six TEG visits. Alex Baker carded a gross 106. The previous course-worst of 105 had stood across 27 prior visits. It stands no longer.

The damage arrived in clusters, like bad news. Holes 3 to 5 bled seven shots, a triple bogey followed by two double bogeys. That was merely the overture. The back nine is where the round stopped resembling golf.

On the par-3 16th, one of the easiest holes out there, he took an 8. A quintuple bogey on a hole most players walk off with a smile. He then birdied the 17th, which was either a statement of defiance or a clerical error. The par-5 18th answered with an 11. A sextuple bogey to close, delivered with the air of a man tidying up.

Remarkably, none of it cost him a thing. Alex Baker remained top of the 2025 TEG Trophy standings after the round. His cushion shrank from twelve shots to eleven. He had authored the worst round in the venue's history and conceded a single stroke of his lead. There is a lesson in that, though nobody wants to learn it.

THE RACES

Jacket Race Churns, Ends Unchanged

A frantic gross battle for the TEG 18 Green Jacket produced five lead changes and settled exactly where it began, while a horror stretch through the turn cost David Mullin his place off the bottom of the Wooden Spoon.

At PGA Catalunya - Tour, the Sunday second round turned the 2025 Green Jacket (Gross) into a shuttle service. It finished precisely where it began.

Jon Baker had held the gross lead since the 5th hole of round one, a reign of 20 holes. A bogey at the par-5 7th handed it to Gregg Williams. From there the lead simply commuted. Williams levelled at the 6th. Jon Baker retook it outright at the 9th. Williams squared again at the 10th, and once more at the 13th. Five swings in all. By the close Jon Baker was back in front and the overall gap was unchanged at two. A great deal happened, and then nothing had.

David Mullin's round came apart in the same stretch. Three holes from the 4th, one of the hardest on the course, cost him 11 shots. Two quadruple bogeys with a triple in the middle, which is a sandwich nobody ordered. A double bogey at the last confirmed the verdict. He now sits at the bottom of the Wooden Spoon standings, having taken the position from Jon Baker. The gap back to safety is two shots.

Elsewhere, Alex Baker's card tied the round's best Trophy score. The man who had just rewritten the course's record for futility remained out front in the 2025 Trophy. Nobody has yet found a way to object.
