TEG 17 · Round 2

DAVID MULLIN

Mullin Breaks the West Cliffs Record

A wretched opening round is put right as David Mullin produces the best round played at this Portuguese links to date.

On Sunday 6 October, David Mullin returned to West Cliffs Golf Links for only the second time in his life and rewrote its record book. A gross 82. The previous mark was 88, and it had stood across the six prior visits made to the course. His own history there was rather less distinguished. He had gone round in 94 on his only previous visit, back in TEG 15, which makes this twelve shots better.

Round 1 had yielded 33 Stableford points, a figure best described as attended rather than contested. In Round 2 he returned 47. A swing of 14.

The engine of it was a run from the 7th to the 10th, where he gained 14 points. Three consecutive holes, the 8th, 9th and 10th, passed without a single dropped gross shot. He birdied both the 9th and the 10th. Two more clean holes to close, the 17th and the 18th, drew him level with Gregg Williams at the top of the TEG 17 Green Jacket standings.

JOHN PATTERSON | JON BAKER

Patterson's Collapse Hands Jon Baker the Lead

Overnight Trophy leader John Patterson loses the plot for eight holes in the middle of his round and returns the heaviest gross score West Cliffs has yet seen.

John Patterson's round at West Cliffs on Sunday began to unravel at the 8th and never found a reason to stop. From the 8th to the 15th he dropped 27 shots without registering a single net par. The stretch deserves to be read slowly. Triple bogeys at the 9th, the 10th and the 11th. A quintuple bogey 10 at the par-5 13th. A sextuple bogey 11 at the par-5 15th, his worst hole of the day relative to par. He had already made a quadruple bogey 8 at the 3rd, the stroke index 1 hole, which by the end counted as encouraging.

The damage added up to a gross 44, his worst round to date, and a new West Cliffs course-worst of 116. The previous mark of 115 had stood across six prior visits. It came a day after a strong opening round. The swing between the two was 17 Stableford points.

The collapse cost him the TEG 17 Trophy lead. It passes to Jon Baker, who moved ahead at the 1st hole and built on it with 14 points over the next four. Patterson also drops to last in the Wooden Spoon race. He arrived at West Cliffs leading the tournament. He left holding its worst score.

ALEX BAKER

Two Quads Can't Stop Alex Baker

A hot start and a defiant birdie carry Alex Baker to a new West Cliffs low despite twin quadruple bogeys in the middle of his round.

Alex Baker's second round at West Cliffs Golf Links swung between recovery and collapse, often within the same five minutes. A hot patch from the 4th to the 8th brought 16 Stableford points, built on steady bogeys either side of a par at the 5th. In this company, that is a purple period. It did not last. A double bogey at the 9th opened the door. At the 10th and 11th, Baker walked through it with a quadruple bogey at each. Two 8s, on a pair of par 4s. Ten shots gone in three holes, delivered with no visible change of expression.

A birdie at the 12th, the easiest hole on the course, finally broke the run of bogeys or worse. The reprieve was brief. From the 13th to the 15th he shed another eight shots via a triple, a triple and a double.

And yet the round was a personal best. His gross 105 beat his previous West Cliffs mark of 110 by five shots, on only his second visit. It also lifted him clear of last place in the 2024 TEG Wooden Spoon race. The vacancy was filled immediately, by John Patterson.
